So I was going to try to use the GMC Typhoon boost control solenoid as suggested in the TurboBricks MS Boost Control thread. As soon as I tried to get one from gmpartsdirect.com though, I figured out that I’d have to find another solution. The solenoid used in that thread is 1997152 and it’s $80+ at the dealer and $50+ through gmpartsdirect.com. Ouch. I then had one of those ‘Eureka’ moments – why not see if there’s another use for this solenoid, like say, emissions. Sure enough, the same physical solenoid, in different configurations is used on lots of GM cars. I took a stroll through the GM cars at a local salvage yard and found what I needed – part # 1997202. It’s the EGR control solenoid on 91-93 V8 Cadillac’s, usually on the rear bank of cylinders on a mounting bracket that sticks it up off the head. A pair of wire cutters and a 8mm nut driver and away you go. Anyway, here’s what it looks like:
If you look carefuly, you’ll notice that the main difference is that the mounting tab is on the other side and instead of a loop for the screw to go through, there’s a stud. I just popped it out and put a screw through the hole. This solenoid has the same resistance and has the same plumbing and if you go the salvage yard route, hell cheap. 🙂
