Streptococcus

What a evil little thing.  It can make even the most peaceful person want to kill something.  Seriously.

Vicki started it.  I knew she had something serious, based on how she was feeling and her symptoms: headache, ear ache, throat pain, fluctuating fever.  I tried to get her to go to urgent care, but she was stubborn.  If you know Vicki you know that’s who she is.  Long story short, she went to urgent care on Monday (15-DEC) and ended up having to go to Northwest Hospital because her condition had deteriorated to the point that the lymph node had gotten seriously swollen and they tried to lance it.  Nothing came out.  They ended up giving her antibiotics via IV and sent her on her way with prescription for antibiotics.

Well, the story doesn’t end there.  At the same time, I started to get a really sore throat.  You know what that means.  Yep, my adventure with strep was beginning.  At the same time, we decided to take Marisol to the doctor on Tuesday (16-DEC) because she was starting to cough, but didn’t have a sore throat.  The quick strep test was negative, but we still had to wait for the 24hr swab.  After we left the pediatrician, we went to the urgent care for me.  They couldn’t get me in and out of there fast enough, once I wrote ‘possible strep’ on my reason for coming in.  😯

After everything was said and done, my quick test came back positive.  I ended up with a prescription for Amoxicillin and this 2% solution of Lidocain.  If you’ve never ‘gargled’ with this stuff, let me describe it: it’s like gargle with 5cc’s of snot that is metallic and foul tasting.  I did it twice, both times almost tossing my cookies.  If I get a tooth ache I’ll just drop a little solution on it but I won’t be gargling with that stuff again.  Evah.

Back to Marisol.  The doctor’s office calls Vicki today – the 24hr swap is growing.  Soooo, now she’s on a antibiotic solution, but we caught it before she got a sore throat.

With any luck we won’t have to do this again this winter.
